SUMMARY:11th Annual Burning of the Socks
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 11th annual Burning of the Socks on March 21\, 2024 to celebrate spring the mariners way! \nWhile working on boats all winter\, Captain Bob Turner – now a Pawleys Island resident – collected sawdust\, bottom paint\, caulk\, and other boatyard leavings on his socks. In other words\, his socks would stand up when he took them off at night. One year\, on the first day of spring\, he took off his socks\, put them in a paint tray\, sprinkled on some lighter fluid\, lit them\, and then had a beer to celebrate. And so the tradition began\, and there are now sock burnings in coastal communities across the country. \nThis fundraiser for the South Carolina Maritime Museum\, features sock-burning festivities\, where attendees take turns throwing their old socks into a bonfire. Musical entertainment by Bil Krauss\, food\, drinks and a good time! \nAfter much success the past two years\, the museum will again include a donation drive for new socks for our friends at Friendship Place. New socks can be dropped off at the museum the entire month of March!

DESCRIPTION:5PM COLONIAL COCKTAILS\nRUMS OF THE ANCIENT MARINERS\nCarin Bloom\, Historian and Educational Interpreter \nThis program takes a brief look at the history of rum\, what was popular in the colonial era in America\, and the basics of rum production. We will sample historical recipes featuring two different rums\, to understand ways in which the spirit was (and still is) consumed. Attendees will leave with a receipt-book of their own\, to try the recipes at home. Billy’s story is a window into the complex world of sailing in Nelson’s Navy\, including trials and tribulations that awaited a “hand-before-the-mast”\, the potential rewards and benefits that came with a life at sea\, and the realistic expectations a man from the lower class might aspire to in the greatest fighting force in the 19th century Atlantic world. \nCarin is delighted to bring humor\, sorrow\, and inquisitiveness to her presentation\, as she presents her interpretation of what Billy might share with an audience\, were he alive today. Hear about how sailors would pass the time\, some superstitions and traditions\, recount Phoenix’s most famous action\, and maybe sing a song or two!
