SUMMARY:Mustering the First South—Gullah Geechee Volunteer Troops
DESCRIPTION:The 1st South Carolina Volunteers of African Descent (33rd U.S. Colored Troops) experienced many “firsts” – first Black Union regiment to be sent into combat\, beginning of continuous Black military service in the U.S. Army\, first public reading of the Emancipation Proclamation\, and many more. \nJoin us at the Gullah Museum at 2 p.m. ET on Thursday\, February 27th\, for a free lecture on “Mustering the First South” with Elizabeth Laney\, MA\, a historian and research associate with the University of South Carolina Beaufort’s Institute for the Study of the Reconstruction Era. She specializes in the history of South Carolina African American communities\, the state’s African American military heritage\, the Reconstruction Era and local/community histories. \nDuring this program learn more about the history of this remarkable regiment\, as well as its ties to Georgetown County and local Gullah Communities. This program is suitable for all ages.
