Why Couples Are Choosing Georgetown for Their Wedding

Couples who want a Lowcountry wedding usually start by looking at Charleston, then look at the price, then start looking elsewhere.

Georgetown is where a lot of them land, and not as a compromise.

The settings are already beautiful. An 18th-century manor house on a bluff above the river. A lawn under live oaks hung with Spanish moss. A working harbor at golden hour. Georgetown doesn’t need much decorating.

The Kaminski House hosts weddings on its grounds overlooking the Sampit River, and it’s one of several historic properties in and around the district used for ceremonies and receptions.

Guests get a destination, not just a venue. Wedding weekends here come with museums, Front Street shopping, waterfront restaurants and beaches half an hour away. Out-of-town guests get something to do on Friday and Sunday, which is the difference between attending a wedding and taking a trip.

It costs less than Charleston. Venue, catering and lodging all price differently an hour up the coast, and the savings are substantial enough to change what’s possible.

A note on planning. Georgetown’s lodging inventory is smaller than a large city’s, so room blocks need to be arranged early — especially in spring and fall, and especially around event weekends.
