Carolina Days Celebration: Explore Georgetown
Spend a day exploring Georgetown County’s museums and historic sites to learn about the history, stories, and people that helped shape the American Revolution. Special programming and discounted admission will be offered at each of the following participating sites. All participating sites will be open from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM.
Gullah Museum: Stop by the Gullah Museum of Georgetown to learn about the rich history and culture of the Gullah Geechee people and how they shaped America from the Colonial period to today. The museum will offer free activities for children, such as Gullah doll-making, a scavenger hunt, coloring sheets, and games. Georgetown County Museum: Explore the history of Georgetown County and see the children’s toys that they may have played with during the Colonial period. Admission is free. 120 Broad Street, Georgetown. www.georgetowncountymuseum.com
Hopsewee Plantation: Hopsewee will be open with tours of the Hopsewee House on the hour from 10:00 to 3:00. Museum open throughout the day and serving in the tearoom from 11:00 to 2:30. Hobcaw Barony: The Discovery Center will be open regular hours, 9 am-5 pm, with exhibits and docents available to assist attendees. There will be a scavenger hunt, coloring, etc. for children. The Discovery tour will be offered at 10 am and again at 11 am. This 2-hour tour of the property is done via a 12-person van. Cost is $30.00. Participants will ride down Old Kings Highway (Francis Marion), visit Friendfield African American Village, learning about rice growing in the very early years of our country, and the role enslaved Africans played. Hobcaw will also be offering a 3-hour “Revolutionary” Explore Tour for $40.00 beginning at 1:30 pm-4:30 pm. The tour includes going out to the salt marsh at Oyster Landing, discussing Native American presence on the property, and looking across to North Island, where Lafayette landed. Kaminski House Museum: The house will be open throughout the day with stationed docents to share intriguing tales of South Carolinians who shaped our past. Maritime Museum: Located in the historic heart of Georgetown, the South Carolina Maritime Museum is dedicated to preserving and promoting our state’s unique maritime history and heritage. From fossils to shipwreck artifacts, to models and the prized 5th Order Fresnel lens from the Georgetown Lighthouse, there’s something for everyone. Tom Yawkey Center: The Center will run two 2-hour bus trips highlighting Revolutionary War sites on our property, including the Cat Island Fort and a view of North Island from South Island to discuss the Lafayette landing. These trips will be free, but limited to 14 people each, and reservations will be required.
